Highlight Companion
FreeCode Complexity
A cognitive-complexity gutter icon for Java and Kotlin methods/functions: a colored badge with the real number, computed with SonarSource's documented Cognitive Complexity algorithm, never blocking the UI thread.
The gap it fixes
Born from real, independent, recent (2026-02) evidence in JetBrains Marketplace reviews of Better Highlights (1.03M downloads, FREEMIUM) — not the raw aggregate rating, which is contaminated by unrelated products sharing the word "better", but the actual review text once filtered:
- Multiple independent reports of IDE freezes on macOS, GoLand, and PyCharm: "IntelliJ freezes while analyzing source code. Disabling the plugin restores normal functionality" and "PyCharm application may become unresponsive, and the only solution is to force quit it."
- The competitor's own changelog admits the same root cause three releases in a row without fully fixing it: "(Bug Fix) Move slow checks out of EDT thread to decrease amount of freezes" (2025.3.2, 2025.3.3, 2025.3.4).
- A Freemium-tier complaint: "Many settings are silently disabled... blocker to me... features as simple as moving inlay hints to the RIGHT" and "I hate that I cannot disable Cognitive Complexity. Even after unchecking all checkboxes all code is underlined."

Simulates a rename in an isolated, in-memory sandbox (using IntelliJ's own PSI, Find Usages, and refactoring processors, never a custom engine) and shows a full impact report, deterministic validation, and a native side-by-side diff before anything touches a real file.
Shows errors and warnings inline, at the end of the line that has them, instead of only as a gutter icon or a squiggly underline you have to hover to read. One hint per line (most severe diagnostic wins) so it never turns into unreadable clutter.
Gutter icon next to every recognized feature-flag-check call's key literal in Java/Kotlin code (isEnabled("checkout_v2"), variation("checkout_v2", false), and similar), showing how many times that exact key is referenced anywhere else in the open project: helps find orphaned flags (dead code left behind after a rollout completed) without connecting to any provider. 100
Gutter icon on any Java/Kotlin for loop whose body accesses a lazy-loaded JPA association directly on the raw loop variable: the classic N+1 query shape: fetch a collection, then trigger one extra query per element while iterating it.
